Clicker Training

What is clicker training?

Clicker training is a way of training animals in which desirable behavior is marked with a sound maker and then reinforced, making the behavior more likely to happen in the future. Who can use clicker training? People of all ages! What animals can be clicker trained? All animals, young or old. All species and breeds, small or large. Clicker training creates strong reliable behaviors, and is a great way of modifying behavior- solving shyness, reactivity and aggression. It is also a ethical way to bond with your companion animal as you train the animal to want to do what you want them to do, rather than physically or psychologically intimidating the animal to do what you want.

How and when they are delivered can be critical to your success as well! Closed captioned for the hearing impaired and translations available to other languages through youtube! At 2:34 during loose leash walking, it would be even better if the treat is delivered with the hand on the same side as the dog. That prevents the dog from wanting to cross in front of you to get the treat.

Your focus on your technique and your dog are key to success. Avoid trying to multitask while training, especially in early stages. Create situations for training where you can focus on your dog and her success. Wait until your dog is successful both at the behavior or task and in several environments before using different environments that will naturally add distractions for you and your dog. This is when you can start teaching your dog to function without your 100% attention.
