Errorless harness tutorial!
- Prerequisite behavior #1: chin rest
- Prerequisite behavior #2: stepping forward
Tools: clicker, treats, object through which your dog step over
- Step 1: refresh chin rest
- Step 2: refresh stepping forward with chin rest
This step is crucial and often forgotten. You need your dog to step into the harness. Move forward and push through, then harness loop.
Using an object your dog needs to step over is an easy way to incorporate that prerequisite into your training plan.
- Step 3: place harness on the hoop and ask for chin rest
- Step 4: change location on the harness so that your dog touches it, while stepping over the hoop to offer chin rest
- Step 5: place harness on the hoop so that your dog puts his head through it, while stepping over and offering chin rest
- Step 6: fade out the hoop
This video is dedicated to all the little dogs in the world who run away from their owners when their owner takes out their harness. The same method of counter conditioning can also be used for dogs that don’t like their muzzle or dogs that don’t like the leash being attached to their collars.
There are now harnesses of all shapes, sizes, colors and materials. How not to get mixed up and choose a harness suited to your dog’s morphology ?
